A number of major festivals, events and travel-related meetings to be held throughout 2010 will ensure a lively and vibrant calendar of activities. Here are some that have been confirmed:

Hat Yai International Lantern Festival, from now until 28 February 2010, at Hat Yai Municipal Park
The Hat Yai International Lantern Festival began on 1 November, 2009, and runs until 28 February, 2010. During this period, the scenic Hat Yai Municipal Park is transformed into a showcase of light presented under the theme, “The Colour of the South”. Festival highlights include:

Chinese New Year Festival in Thailand, 8 - 22 February, 2010, in Bangkok (Chinatown on Yaowarat Road, CentralWorld Plaza, the National Theatre), Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Ayutthaya, Chonburi (Pattaya), Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Ratchasrima, Songhkla (Hat Yai), and Phuket. This year, a special treat is in store with magnificent arts and colourful cultural performances to be presented by artists from 10 provinces in China. These visiting groups will provide rare insights into China’s vast cultural diversity with authentic demonstrations of Shaolin Kung Fu and acrobatics, Chinese opera, traditional puppet demonstrations, mask-changing dances, and Chinese music performances. There also will be tribal dances from Tibet and Mongolia. |

Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony, 13-15 February, 2010: Now in its 14th year, Trang’s underwater wedding ceremony, must be one of the most unusual ways to tie the knot. This unique event is right at the top in the creative wedding category and has defied critics over the years to emerge as a firm favourite for those who want to make their Valentine’s Day wedding extraordinary. In 2000, it was declared the largest underwater wedding ceremony by the Guinness Book of Records, while more recently it opened the ceremony to physically-challenged couples. The Society of American Travel Writers Freelance Council Meeting, 16-26 March, 2010, at the Pullman Bangkok King Power: Over 75 media will participate in SATW meeting in Bangkok. Mekong River International Multi-Sport ITU Asian Cup 2010, 26 - 28 March, 2010: Sports enthusiasts travel to a Mekong River border town to compete for glory and a handsome purse. Triathlon enthusiasts are a healthy and resilient bunch. They travel far and wide, against all odds, to participate in their favourite three-discipline sport. The Mekong River International Multi-Sport ITU Asian Cup, 2010, provides a packed programme, with the starting and finishing line in downtown Nong Khai next to the picturesque Mekong River. Songkran Festival, 13-15 April, 2010: A fun-filled national festival that commemorates the role of water in Thai social, cultural, economic and spiritual life. Marked during the peak of the summer heat wave, it includes the annual bathing of Buddha images carried out at temples and homes across the country. Children sprinkle water on the hands of elders to pay respect. |

Hua Hin Jazz Festival, 12 - 14 June, 2010: The 8th Hua Hin Jazz Festival will be held 12-14 June, 2010, at two sites at Hua Hin, 200 km south of Bangkok. Entrance to all performances is free. Hua Hin has been associated with the country’s jazz community since the 1950s and the jazz festival is organised annually to honour the musical talents of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. |

Hua Hin Regatta 2009, 30 July - 3 August, 2010: Yachting and sailboat enthusiasts from all over the world gather in the idyllic seaside resort of Hua Hin, only three hours drive from Bangkok, for three days of competition. The coveted trophies are the Royal Vega Rudder trophy of His Majesty the King, Super Mod National Championship trophy from HM the King, OK Dinghy National Championship trophy from HM the Queen, and Princess Cup for Optimist Championship of the late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. Hua Hin is home to one of the summer palaces of His Majesty the King, a great patron of the sport. Hence, this annual regatta is held in his honour. |
