THAILAND WINS PRESTIGIOUS GRAND TRAVEL AWARD FOR ‘THE BEST TOURIST DESTINATION 2009’ FOR THE 7th CONSECUTIVE TIME

Travel News, an independent Swedish travel trade magazine, recently presented the annual Grand Travel Award — the equivalent of the travel and tourism industry’s ‘Oscars’ — for the seventeenth time. This year’s award presentation ceremony was held at The Grand Hotel in Stockholm on 12 February 2009.

In the “World’s Best Tourist Country” category, Thailand ranked first once again, making this the seventh consecutive year that Thailand has won the Swedish Grand Travel Award.

TAT’s Stockholm office was also among the star performers in the “Best Tourist Office” category. TAT Stockholm ranked second after the Danish National Tourism Organization (Visit Denmark).

In the “World’s Best International Airlines” category, Thai Airways International the kingdom’s national carrier, ranked second, after Singapore Airlines.

Mr Manit Boonchim, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand office in Stockholm, accepted the award on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand. The prestigious award presentation ceremony attended by 500 guests.

The Travel News Grand Travel Awards Committee comprises members of the publication’s editorial team and four representatives from the Swedish travel and tourism industry. The Award Committee submits its nominations for consideration by the members of the Swedish travel and tourism industry; each allocates a score to the countries proposed by the Award Committee. The awards are presented in several categories with scores allocated according to a scale of 1-6, with 1 being the lowest score and 6 is the highest.

Given the close partnership TAT Stockholm has forged with Swedish tour operators, airlines and media, this has contributed significantly to the steady growth in Swedish visitor arrivals to Thailand over the years. In 2007, Thailand welcomed a total of 378,387 Swedish visitors who accounted for a total of 25 billion baht of tourism revenue and foreign exchange earnings to the Thai economy. Pending the release of official 2008 tourism statistics collated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, total Swedish visitor arrivals to Thailand is expected to be 392,000 generating 27.5 billion baht.
