Thailand staging Jazz concerts in memory of HM King Bhumibol

Bangkok, 23 November, 2016 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is staging a series of concerts in memory of His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The performances will celebrate the late King’s love of music and talents as a performer and composer. The “Jazz in Memory” shows will include performances by famous artistes and a symphony orchestra.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “His Majesty’s love of music is well known and one of the best ways of celebrating his memory is by allowing people to enjoy performances of the King’s music in places that were close to his heart.

“We are proud of our musical monarch, and these concerts are a way of showing the world that Thailand is celebrating the reign of the Great King and his achievements, while inviting international visitors to enjoy his musical legacy.”

TAT is staging the Jazz concerts on 26-27 November, 2016, and entry is free at both shows.

Jazz in the World Heritage will take place at Wat Phra Ram in Ayutthaya and the Jazz musicians will be accompanied by an orchestra. Famous artistes performing will include Nantida Kaewbuasai, Jennifer Kim and others.

Jazz on the Beach is being held by the sea at Laem Tan in the Saen Suk district of Chon Buri. The concert will be honoured by the presence of Dr. Pathorn Srikaranonda, a musician of the Friday Amphornsathan Band, with which H.M. the Late King used to play. Dr Pathorn will perform the musical compositions of the King as well as recollect his personal memories of performing with the late monarch.

At both locations, there will also be exhibitions where visitors can find information about the “70 Routes in His Majesty’s Footsteps” project, which promotes regions of the kingdom visited by His Majesty when supporting the rural people.

TAT wants to encourage people to follow in His Majesty’s footsteps and appreciate the King’s many achievements. There is also the chance to try tasty Thai cuisine and learn about the Royal Projects, agricultural stations and initiatives put in place by His Majesty during his reign.

In addition, from 29 November to 11 December, for residents and tourists in Bangkok, there will be a series of performances at EmQuartier called “The Royal Musical Legacy” that will remember and pay respect to His Majesty King Bhumibol through his own music. These concerts which take place from 10.30 to 20.00 Hrs. are free and promise to be highly memorable.

His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej had a passion for Jazz and played and composed his own music. Among the 50 compositions he wrote is a ballet and songs for a 1950’s Broadway musical. He not only played saxophone, but also trumpet, clarinet and the piano, and on a visit to New York in 1960 even played a jam session with the Jazz legend Benny Goodman.

These jazz concerts are just one of the many cultural experiences visitors to Thailand can enjoy in the next few months. All of Thailand’s national museums and historical parks are offering free entry to visitors till the end of January 2017, so they can explore the kingdom’s rich heritage.
