The annual Buri Ram Long Boat Racing Festival is scheduled to take place over this weekend of 4 to 5 November on the scenic Mun River.
Buri Ram is one of Thailand’s 11 destinations, including Chainat, Saraburi, Singburi, Mukdahan, Chumphon, Nakorn Sawan, Phichit, Nan, Phisanulok and Narathiwat, that organises long boat races annually.
The long boat racing in Buri Ram began in 1937, and has been held every year on the first weekend of November when the Mun River is high.
The races cover three categories: large wooden long boat races with 55 oarsmen; medium-sized long boat races with 40 oarsmen; and small-sized steel long boat races with 36 oarsmen. Competition teams come from within Buri Ram as well as from nearby provinces, totalling about 40 to 50 boats.
Visitors to Buri Ram during this weekend may want to witness the province’s thrilling boat races as well as the parade of fancy decorated boats during the event. Other highlights of the city are the two ancient castles – Prasat Hin Phanom Rung and Prasat Hin Mueang Tam – and the two new sport castles of i-Mobile Stadium and Chang International Circuit.
