The 12th Muang Thai Chiang Mai Marathon 2017 will take place on Sunday, 24 December, 2017, in the picturesque northern city also known as ‘The Rose of the North’, featuring a marathon, half marathon, mini marathon, fun run and kids run.
Making for a sporty Christmas Eve, the marathon (42.195 km) will start at 4 a.m., the half marathon (21.1 km) at 5 a.m., the mini marathon (10 km) at 6 a.m. and then the Smile Run and Kids Run (3 km) at 7 a.m. The start and finish point is historic Tha Pae Gate in the city centre, one of Chiang Mai’s most famous landmarks and which dates back to when the province acted as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The gate is part of the old city wall that was built in the 13th Century.
Last year’s marathon saw 11,000 people from 53 countries participate and organisers are this year expecting that number to increase to 55 countries.
The race route is flat, with no mountain climbs, and takes runners along city roads past ‘Lanna’ style buildings and temples, the city moat and other enchanting sights, with the iconic Doi Suthep mountain providing a dramatic backdrop.
With the 12th Muang Thai Chiang Mai Marathon 2017 happening on a Sunday, participants and spectators will find themselves ideally located at Tha Pae Gate to enjoy the famous Sunday Market. Starting at around 4 p.m. and continuing on til midnight, the Sunday Market stretches from Tha Phae Gate along Ratchadamnoen Road which becomes pedestrian only for the evening.
The Sunday Market is a lively and entertaining experience. Stalls sell quality arts and crafts, fabrics and other items many of which are lovingly made by the talented vendors themselves, delicious local cuisine and tasty treats are available and musicians, dancers and street entertainers add to the festive atmosphere.
