The Seasons Episode 5: The Sea of Lives

TAT Newsroom Short Documentary
The Seasons Episode 5: The Sea of Lives
Theme: Nature Is the Bridge of Lives
Duration 3 minutes
Location: Libong, Trang

EPISODE SYNOPSIS

Every year, the winter breeze that caresses Trang province’s sea brings flight after flight of migratory birds.

Serene, safe and abounding with natural resources, this fertile sea serves as a haven for various species of visiting creatures.

Migratory birds are not the only highlight of this area. Under the turquois sea lives the dugong, one of Thailand’s endangered marine species with a population of just under 200.

Today, most of the locals still pursue their simple, traditional way of life, with small boats as a means of making a living.  To them, money is a secondary necessity.  Their top priority is the upkeep of nature.  According to their consensus, wide mesh dragnets are used so as to avoid catching small fish, and where vegetation becomes sparse in a mangrove forest, new trees are planted to restore it to the original condition.

The locals’ upkeep of nature and traditional way of life contributes to the strength of Libong Island, preventing it from being affected by the torrential stream of modern tourism.  This island owes such an accomplishment to the peoples’ commitment to preserving the beauty of its natural surroundings.
