Bangkok, 7 August, 2015 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is inviting local and international tourists to join the Thai people in celebrating the Mother’s Day occasion with several activities to be held countrywide as a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit who is commemorating her 83th Birthday Anniversary on 12 August this year.
Mrs. Juthaporn Rerngronasa, TAT Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) said, “On this auspicious occasion, TAT has joined forces with public and private agencies throughout the country to organise special activities as to express our gratitude to Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand who has contributed to the development of the country in various aspects; such as, conserving national cultural heritages, elevating the people’s living standard, as well as promoting the Thai ways of life to worldwide recognition.”
For 2015 Mother’s Day celebrations, highlighted activities include:
Candle-lit Ceremony
The annual regal candle-lit ceremony, to be presided over by Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, will take place at Sanam Luang in Bangkok on 12 August while an evening concert by leading Thai singers and bands will take place at Sanam Suapa from 19.00 hrs. onwards. In other provinces, the ceremony will take place at the provincial city halls or major venues.
Bike for Mom
This year will also see a grand celebration specially-organised as a tribute to Her Majesty the Queen. The nationwide ‘Bike for Mom’ campaign, chaired by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn that will take place simultaneously on 16 August in every province, starting at 15:00 hrs. onwards.
The activity is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of well-wishers and cycling enthusiasts. To date, nearly 300,000 enthusiasts nationwide have registered to join the event, which has become the biggest biking event ever been held in Thailand.
In Bangkok, participants will join the ride starting from Ratchadamnoen Avenue onto Si Ayutthaya Road, then head for Victory Monument and continue further onto the organised biking routes for the total distance of 43 kilometres. For other provinces, the biking is arranged by provincial authorities and the route starts from the respective city hall.
As part of this event, the Ministry of Culture also invites everyone to join the ‘Bike for Mom’ photo contest. Applicants must submit photos taken from the activities during 25 July to 16 August, and the deadline for submission is within 23 August, 2015. The Way of Silk, the Way of Thai: A Tribute to Her Majesty the Queen
The special exhibition entitled “The Way of Silk, the Way of Thai: A Tribute to Her Majesty the Queen” in recognition of Her Majesty the Queen’s continuous contribution to the conservation, development and promotion of Thai silk into international awareness will be held for two weeks from 17-30 August at the Siam Paragon Department Store, allowing both Thais and foreign tourists to see the legendary beauty of Thai silks and their implications to the modern ways of life.
During the event, visitors can admire the beauty of Thai silks through a special exhibition, which will showcase top-quality Thai silks from the five most famous silk-weaving villages of the Kingdom. There are also a demonstration of silk-weaving techniques, demonstration in fashionable techniques in wearing Thai silks, as well as mini-fashion shows presenting fashionably-designed clothes made from Thai silks, especially the designs by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana and many other leading fashion designers. The exhibition will be held between 11:00-21:00 hrs. every day, with mini-fashion shows to be held on the weekends.
In addition, a special fashion show and Thai silk exhibition is to be held on 14 August between 17:00 – 20:00 hrs. at Parusakawan Palace, Ratchadamnoen Nok Road. The event will showcase Thai and international designer fashion clothes made from best quality Thai silk.
The “Creative Industry: Gifts for Moms” Fair
This fair is being organised to commemorate the 12 August birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, an event which is celebrated annually as National Mother’s Day by the Ministry of Industry in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority
Visitors can see a unique range of Thai products, which combine local traditions and wisdom-based craftsmanship. Their innovative designs make them perfect for household use, souvenir and gift items as well as industrial use. All are available at very reasonable prices and each week, products sold at the fair will be different. The Fair is held daily during 3- 23 August, 2015, between 10:00 – 19:00 hrs. at the Khlong Padung Krung Kasem Market.
