The Thao Suranari Memorial Fair 2018 will take place from 23 March to 3 April at the Thao Suranari Monument, an important landmark of Nakhon Ratchasima, and the ceremonial grounds in front of the Provincial Hall.
Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol will graciously preside over the grand opening ceremony on 23 March at 18.00 Hrs.
The Thao Suranari Memorial Fair is held annually to commemorate Thao Suranari, locally known as Ya Mo, a famous heroine of ancient Thai history who courageously led Thai armies to victory when the nation was attacked in 1826. Her brave action has made her a popular figure from Thai history ever since.
The event is one of the biggest annual events that takes place in Nakhon Ratchasima and has become popular with international visitors seeking to ‘Open to the New Shades’ in Amazing Thailand’s Northeastern Region, or Isan. The event is also marked as one of the not-to-miss event in the action-packed Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018.
This year, the opening ceremony on 23 March will start early in the morning, at 07.00 Hrs., with the ceremonial relaying of the event’s opening flame from four starting points – Thung Samrit Memorial in Phimai district, Dan Khun Thot District Office, Sanjaopor Subdistrict Municipality in Wang Nam Khiao district, and Soeng Sang District Office. This will be followed by the late morning, at 09.45 Hrs., ritual to pay tribute to the relics of Thao Suranari at Wat Sala Loi temple.
Then at 13:30 Hrs., there will be the procession to pay tribute to Thao Suranari, comprising five parades under the themes of the City of Heroines; the City of Finest Silk and Unique Fried Noodles; the Legend of Prasat Hin Phimai; the Uniqueness of Dan Kwian Clay, and the “Stability, Prosperity, and Sustainability” Model City. This will be followed by the spectacular dance performance to pay tribute to Thao Suranari by 5,000 performers.
Throughout the course of the 12-day event, visitors will also have the chance to learn more of the story of Thao Suranari and her brave heroic acts as well as the history of Korat City. In addition, there will be various exhibitions and educational displays from local government agencies.
A range of competitions will also be held, including Miss Ya Mo’s Granddaughter contest, Top Korat Cat contest, and Healthy Baby contest, as well as many contests to award the most beautiful flowers, orchids and decorative plants.
Visitors will also have the chance to shop at various fairs, including the Red Cross Fair, many food and local product fairs, and flowers and decorative plants fair. They can also go back in time to explore amazing ‘retro’ Thai local experiences at the ‘culture road’ that will be featuring traditional-style community market and floating market, as well as fun activities and performances, such as, Thai circle dance and Likay (Thai folk opera).
