Bangkok, 14 February, 2018 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) today staged a special Thailand-China culinary exchange between Thai Chef Namchai of the Grand Sanyod Sathon-Bang Rak, a Bib Gourmands restaurant in the first ever Michelin Guide Bangkok 2018, and six Chinese Chefs from the World Federation of the China Catering Industry.
During the cooking exchange demonstrations, Chef Namchai cooked one of Grand Sanyod’s famous Cantonese dishes, ratna (pan fried noodles with gravy) while the six Chinese Chefs created Chinese candied banana fritters or basi banana to delight special guests and members of the media.
This special Thai-Chinese cooking exchange demonstration forms part of TAT’s supported 2018 Chinese New Year celebrations in 13 locations across the Kingdom, which include Thailand-China cultural exchange performances by 135 performers from nine provinces in China, which are Fujian, Hainan, Inner Mongolia, Shandong, Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Hunan, Shanxi and Hubei.
As part of the grand celebrations on 16 February at Yaowarat, the historic home to Bangkok’s Chinese community, which will be presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, 18 top chefs from the World Federation of the China Catering Industry led by its Present, Chef Wu Li, will create Southern Chinese delicacies for the occasion.
Mr. Tanes Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said, “As well as cultural and culinary exchanges between Thailand and China during the auspicious 2018 Chinese New Year celebrations, we see this as an opportunity to enhance the awareness of the first ever Michelin Guide Bangkok and to motivate local and international tourists to embark on a culinary journey to taste signature dishes in different locations across the Kingdom as a way of exploring unique Thai culture and ways of life.”
TAT has selected the Grand Sanyod Sathon-Bang Rak as the venue for this special Thailand-China culinary exchange due to its authenticity in the cooking method that has been continued since it was found in 1962. Tagged as a ‘Bib Gourmands’ in the first ever Michelin Guide Bangkok 2018, the restaurant was described as being ‘Chinese’ and ‘Simple’, and that this tiny noodle shop tucked away in a small alley has attracted a loyal fan base for over 50 years.
